VDL Stud Visit and Martha's Horse Purchase

VDL Stud.  Beers, Freisland.  The largest stud in Holland with 40 stallions.  A family owned and operated stud farm well known for quality horses.  Weipke & Jenny van de Lageweg and their 3 sons Weibe Yde, Janko, and Siepko run the operation.  Janko is responsible for the US customers and will be our host.  VDL is not only a stud farm, but also a breeder with 80 mares of their own.  VDL is known internationally and very famous with the jumper and dressage breeders.  VDL started their Stud Farm with Nimmerdor (Stallion of the Century) and sire to many approved sons such as Goodtimes, Wellington, Consul, Telstar, Aram, and more.  Consul is in the United States standing at Iron Spring Farm in Pennsylvania.  Aram will be coming the US this year to stand at Majestic Gaits in New Hampshire.  Telstar has been standing in the United States.  VDL stands many other famous jumping and dressage stallions Indoctro, Flemmingh, Emilion, Corland, Orame, Farrington, Kalusha and many more!  VDL was also the owner of Jus de Pommes, the 2 time Gold medalist in the Atlanta Olympics.  Jus de Pommes unfortunatley died shortly after the Olympics.  VDL ships frozen semen around the world, leases stallions and helps find jumping & dressage horses for people.

Martha trying out a nice Flemmingh gelding.

Is this the Cabochon son I want?

He is quite handsome #68?

Usually the horses shown are trotted in hand on the street. Yes, this is the one I will buy!

Martha!  The happy new owner of the Cabochon.  She was on CNN because he was stuck here during the export freeze for Hoof & Mouth Disease.  But, Rafael is happily home now.

Gone for dinner at VDL.  Shoes should be warm on the heated tile floor when we leave.  Now who left their shoes neatly and who left them messy?

What a feast and prepared by Wyneke van de Lageweg!

Everyone enjoyed the VDL hospitality. Pictures are dark but that is Martha's back, Kayce to the right of her and Janko behind her.

Is everybody happy?  Merijane showing she is having a super time.

I think this was Wiepke's 2nd or 3rd helpings.  It sure was yummy!

The top scoring mare of Holland owned by VDL and bred to VDL Atlantic (Accord II)

Melissa Meryweather checking out the mares.  Melissa bought an Elite mare Monalissa (Nimmerdor) in foal to Orame.  She had a gorgeous colt Urame who is now owned by Kathy Hickerson.  Urame got first premium at the keurings this year and is a stallion prospect.  2 more happy new owners!

We got to see one of the first Orame colts in Holland.  Or was it a filly?

Thanks VDL for a wonder feast, showing us super horses and great time.   We also visited the following places but I was not there for pictures since we went off to look at horses separately:

Family van Straaten, Hazenberg.  Owns the dam of It's Otto (Sultan x Farn). One of the best horses Holland ever produced. It's Otto is still competing in jumping at highest level with Geof Billington.  Currently It's Otto is listed as #18 in jumping by the World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses (WBFSH). For 1990-1999, It's Otto was #6 of the jumpers.   Family van Straaten breeds approximately 18 mares every year.

Mr. J. Hazenberg.  Breeder of the famous Queen of Diamonds. Queen of Diamonds (Rigoletto x Farn), won the Rome Grand Prix with Jean Claud Vangeenberghe in 1989.  Mr. Hazenberg has 8-10 mares in foal.
